You know the Albin 26?

E-mail Print PDF

I was searching the internet for Albin photos when I found something very interesting. Per Brohäll obviously designed a successor for the Albin 25: the Albin 26! This model is not to be mixed up with Albin 26 TE (Tournament Express) or the Albin 26 Centere Console, both built by the US Albin Marin. The Brohäll-model is somehow strange looking: following the proven concept of the A25, but a little bit "bigger" and - at least in my opinion - somehow "ugly": showing more modern lines (according to those days), however less balanced in terms of design, a quite average look. It seems as if Per Brohäll had thrown over board his so unique style concept, trying to draw something more contemporary.

The Albin 26 was built from 1979 to 1982, still in Kristinehamn, Sweden.

Length 26' (7,95 m), Beam 9' 5" (2,88 m)

Engine Volvo Penta TMD40 (6 cyl. 139 hp Turbo Diesel)

So far I have not found any information about how many Albin 26 have been built, nor if there are still any running. At least one was listed for sale on the internet recently.

All the photos shown here are from the Marinmuseum, Karlskrona, Sweden. The museum is an incredible source of photos and various other material covering a huge share of Sweden's naval history.

Lars Larsson deceased

As far as I understood from various Kristinehamn local newspapers, Lars Larsson, the owner of Albin Marin at the time the Albin 25 was developed, deceased in January, 2010, at age 86.

Thus after Per Brohäll, who died in 1989, another major contributor to the Albin Motor Cruiser, passed away.

In 2000 there was a booklet published (in Swedish, of course): 100 ys Anniversary of Albin in Kristinehamn. Though in Swedish, you may find valuable information and interesting photos.

Per Brohäll - The Designer

E-mail Print PDF

Per BrohallOn an Australian website he is referred to as "Sweden's leading naval architect Captain Per Brohall". It is not easy to find information about Per Brohall (1917 - 1989) on the internet. There is a small article in the Swedish Wikipedia. What we found out, however, is that in the 1960s and 1970s Brohall (correct spelling is actually Brohäll, letter "ä" pronounced like the "a" in "hat") designed a couple of boats for Lars Larsson, owner of Larsson Trade AB (renamed in Albin Marin AB in 1971), some of them very successful, among them the Albin 25 (with aft cabin named A25AK, without the aft cabin named A25 Fisherman) and the quite similar Albin 21. There were also the Albin Viggen 23', then his probably best shot, the quite famous Albin Vega 27', and the Albin Singoalla 34'. Also the Albin 30 came from his drawing board.

Undoubtedly, two of Brohall's boats broke the records in their classes: Over 2500 Albin 25 and about 3500 Albin Vega left the Albin Marin shipyard in Kristinehamn, Sweden. So, no wonder that they still have many fans all over the world. I even found a photo from an A25AK moored in Japan.
