Updates on Dido's Watermaker

E-mail Print PDF

During 2010 and 2011 we got quite a few e-mails from people from all over the world who where building their own DIY watermaker.

Of course it makes us happy to realize that the idea - that we, too, found in the internet - spreads out.

Therefore I updated our "watermaker story".

And: In case you think that I might be of any help don't hesitate to "contact the webmaster" ;-)

Regards and Happy New Year out there to all of you!

New Antifouling For Dido

E-mail Print PDF

You all know about this: When your boat is out of the water you see what happened to your hull. And most likely you mention to yourself that it would be time to redo the antifouling. Probably you wonder whether some mending work will be enough or whether you should remove everything that has been put onto the hull over the years, scratch off everything until you can see the original gel coat again and make it all new.

You may then decide to mend it once again and do the major refit of the bottom next year, because we all know what kind of job this is.

Anyway, the time will come when no excuse will allow another "next year".

For Dido's bottom the end of the last season was the point where to make a fundamental decision: everything on the bottom had to be removed and something new had to be applied. Thus, this raised two questions. First: How to remove the old stuff both entirely and conveniently (if one might hope that there could be any kind of "convenience" in that sort of work). Second: What antifouling to put on Dido's hull then?

Dido's Helm Canvas

E-mail Print PDF

Dido's canvas is about 20 ys old. So it was there when we bought our Albin. The concept and functionality is good we think. The material however has reached the end of its life time cycle. We shall have it renewed over the winter 2010/2011. We plan just to have the same concept made, probably of a different color (black is hot!).

There is an entry in the guest book that asks for a proper helm canvas. Therefore I'll decribe it here. We think our helm canvas is somewhat close to perfect. It is absolutely waterproof, even when Dido is trailered in pouring rain at a speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) or more. It is simple, easy to open and probably easy to copy.

Summer 2010 on the Adriatic

E-mail Print PDF

Kaprije Island in the Background

From the beginning of July until the end of August we again spent our holidays on the Adriatic. Dido had to stand the test whether the modifications that we had made over the winter turned out to be improvements - and what was still missing.

In a few words: We did a bit more than 600 nm, some 120 hrs have been added to the hour meter within about six weeks. We had a few days of rain and some heavy winds, one up to more than 50 knots. Our watermaker produced about 3000 liter / 800 US gallons of fine fresh water and we had to spend half a day in a local hospital with our son with suspicion of hernia (which turned out to be a strain trauma) - and we learned about the 50' planing boaters' ideas about seamanship. We found new places and had to part with some that we had loved before.
